  • Of all the inaugural speech done by previous presidents. Pres. Aquino is one of the most overwhelming speech i’ve ever heard. Direct to the point and really for the people. I feel there would really be a big change to our Nation.

  • Speech long on promises, empty in content – solons
    By Angie Rosales
    07/02/2010
Legislators described President Aquino’s inaugural speech as spiced with motherhood statements and promises to elicit thundering applause but was empty overall in its content.
Even Aquino’s former colleagues in the Senate expressed disappointment over the inaugural speech.
Sen. Edgardo Angara yesterday joined those who criticized Aquino’s speech, describing it as a mere enumeration of “doable problems,” far from the inspirational speeches expected of a leader of the country.
“There is no soaring oratorical rhetoric. There is no grand vision he described which usually a new president opens his administration with a challenge to the people because you need to motivate and inspire people. What he did, by way of inspiring people is to enumerate and list down practical, doable problems which every Filipino knows is close to, because it affects him,” Angara said.
“He hits the heartstring of the ordinary people. That’s his way, I guess, of inspiring,” the senator said, appearing in the weekly Kapihan sa Senado news forum.
Asked about his impression on Aquino’s speech, Angara admitted that he was expecting a “Kennedy-type or Obama-type” of oratory that expresses hope for a new Philippines.
Yet, the senator himself was still soft on the new Chief Executive, as he himself provided possible explanation as to the lack
of fireworks in the inaugural speech.
“I’m just too traditional, old fashioned maybe,” he said, adding that avoiding the burning issue on the Hacienda Luisita dispute in the speech could have been deliberate as it may constitute subjudice as the case is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
“But on second thought, maybe it’s really not in the character of the President. I don’t know who his speechwriter,” he said.
Angara also cited some observations in some of the decisions made so far made by Aquino such as the the apparent inclination of the new administration to sectarian schools, based on his choice of Cabinet officials for the education sector and lack of reference to science and technology.
Angara was referring to De La Salle University president Bro. Armin Luistro as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Patricia Licuanan for the Commission on Higher Education.
Licuanan, according to the senator, was a product of Miriam College and Ateneo de Manila University.
“It seems that their inclination is to go to sectarian schools for leadership. It does not provide balance to the public education system because basic education is 70 percent public. It is only in the higher education where private education component has a high percentage. You must have a balance, public, private, education leadership. It maybe just purely coincidence that both Licuanan and Bro. Armin Luistro both came from the private, sectarian education sector.
“You cannot also remove from the new President his fraternal ties to his alma mater. If he’s a graduate from UP or UST your first tendency is to look to your classmates. But he’s President of the Philippines. He’s President of 96 million Filipinos, mostly educated in non-sectarian, public school systems.
“Let’s see. These two, Licuanan and Bro. Armin Luistro, are outstanding educators. But of course you cannot disassociate your outlook and viewpoint from your own background. Yes I think he’s got some grasp. But in this case as well as in the case of science and technology, I think it lacked reference as well,” Angara, former president of the University of the Philippines (UP) and chairman of the Senate committee on science and technology,” he said.
Others saw the speech as nothing but empty rhetoric.
Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said Aquino not only overlooked the theme of the occasion, that being his inauguration as the country’s 15th president.
“Aquino delivered a campaign speech, not an inaugural address,” said Lagman. “He forgot that he had already won. He should heal the wounds of the recent electoral contest, instead of deliberately picking at the scabs.”
“The speech was replete with motherhood statements and short of requisite particulars,” the Albay solon averred adding it was “”akin to an exercise of waiting for the blanks to be filled.”
For his part, Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez said it he finds it ironic that while Aquino had earlier been taking potshots at former President Arroyo’s pump-priming activities, he himself had put emphasis in his speech the revival of his late mother’s “emergency employment program” to effect infrastructure programs which would in turn provide employment for local communities.
“That in itself, is a pump-priming activity,” Suarez said in a telephone interview. “It may go under a different name but it is still a pump-priming activity intended to stimulate the economy.”
Prior to his inauguration, Aquino’s camp had been continuously hitting the Arroyo administration for bequeathing to them a P340-billion deficit, most of which was spent for pump-priming activities which spared the country from the brunt of the global economic meltdown.
Suarez also took a dig at Aquino for forming the Truth Commission to be headed by former Chief Justice Hilarion Davide saying it would only duplicate the functions of other government agencies.
“You have the Commission on Audit (CoA), Ombudsman, Department of Justice (DoJ) and even the Congress to investigate these allegations of illegal and anomalous government transactions,” said Suarez. “It would only be a duplication of functions.”
Furthermore, Suarez said that since the Truth Commission is not a Constitutional body, it would not have powers to summon the complainants, witnesses and suspects to the case or case it would be investigating.
“You cannot employ a shotgun approach in investigating cases. You have to identify the complainants, witnesses and suspects to the case. But how would you summon them if you don’t have the power to do so?” said Suarez. “And I don’t think congress would give the Commission that power.” Charlie V. Manalo

  • @Wtf, we know that some are going to oppose or against anything on what aquino would say …. especially from you . So , if you don’t want to join the call for change or to be just a part of this change for the country , then ,then kami na lang ..huwag ka na lang sumali at hindi ka na rin namin isasali ,nakakahiya naman sa iyo e…. while kami naman ay gagawa ng bagay na pwedeng makatulong para sa bayan . Just sit there, you can continue to open your mouth and wait for something to pour in it .

The speech of Noynoy was not a SONS it was just an inaugural address …kailangan pa niya ng 100 days to figure things out in the government and then he will report to the Nation kung ano ang status ng gobyerno, ano ang ginawa at kung ano pa dapat gawin .

Isnag minuto pa lang si noynoy as president and you want him to tell everything on what is going on in the government .

Usually kapag corruption ang pinaguusapan, ang matinding kumalaban nito ay ang mga taong mga corrupt or naging parte ng corruption . Angara has a last minute project in his district ,na isiningit sa budget allocation, even one of the contibutory factor why we have a balloning budget deficit …. there might be something fishy about it.

  • @wtf ,Edcel lagman , angara ang suarez are GMA supporters , so what do you expect from them ……Of course..of course… it should be the other way around . Common sense lang iyan pre …. parang ngayon ka lang yata ipinanganak a…..

  • In democratic country, the new elected president have 100 days to prove his ability, does the politicians who attack P-Noy after his inaugural speech are not democratic?

  • it’s just a matter of time. anyway, i trust noy

  • Si Angara kung magsalita akala mo a good speaker! He was our Commencement Speaker during our graduation in College.

Did he inspire us. NGEK NGEK nya. He made us sleep. He failed to connect to us. He lectured something on history, which don’t need at that moment. Besides, we have several history subjects since grade school. He is right, he too traditional.

Ask the Filipino people if they were inspired by the speech of my president, our president.

What can you expect these guys anyway.

  • they are the same sore losers that until now they’re still on the denial-stage.

kawawang mga tao, hindi pa rin matanggap na wala na sila sa kapangyarihan.

  • Legislators? Who are they?ahh ‘yung mga dating tuta ni Gloria? hayaan nyo na sila hanggang ngayun hndi nila matanggap na tapos na ang maliligayang araw nila,o baka me mga itinatago din skeleton sa mga closets ang mga eto kaya nanginginig na sa takot dahil alam nilang babalikan sila ng gobyerno.

  • Yesterday, I was riding a taxi ,then, the taxi driver notice some undescipline PUJ driver double parking along the road . Nagaalburo bigla ang taxi driver,at talagang galit and he ask me if there is a way that he can call the President . I was surprise about his remarks and concern, because he was serious about it … hindi ko talaga sukat akalain na ganito pala kalalim ang impact sa speech ni Noynoy ,everybody wants to take his part for the change.

I just hope that people should begin to realize that any good deed we do and we still have to do ,is entirely for the benifit of this nation and our children . If Noynoy succeeds ,the nation will succeed , we will succeed and our children shall bear the fruit from it .

  • Yun din ang tanong ko sa-an tayo magsumbong o mag-text kung merong mga abuso o tresspasses kahit sa maliit na bagay.Ang pagbabago magsimula sa maliit na bagay.

  • I was fortunate enough to attend the inaugural ceremonies. Iba ang pakiramdam. That was my proudest moment as a Filipino. And during his speech, PNoy is very different. Iba ang aura niya. Ang tapang, ang lakas. I believe that slowly, he begins to unfold his potentials as a president.

  • I watched the inauguration via live streaming sa net and when I heard the speech, in all honesty, I cried.

For the common tao like me, I’m not looking for the nitty gritty of how he will solve the problems of the country. He’s the president, he’s my leader and I’m expecting him to set the direction, to show the goal. And in that address, he did. He gave us something to look forward to, he gave us the direction for the change we are all aspiring for.

  • a stupid speech from a stupid president. I’m sure the EMO crowd got all teary eyed listening to his cliches

  • A stupid comment from a stupid N/A…

  • @N/A the stupid president you are calling would be the best president we’ll ever have. If you don’t like him, to hell with you, you better pack up and go somewhere else. you are not a Filipino.
