Stand Your Ground

I learned an important lesson from Noynoy Aquino this week after having spent some time in the Senate listening to him indefatigably interpellate on the budget: Stand your ground.

Noynoy wanted answers, he wanted everything accounted for. With the inconsistencies he uncovered, I’m not surprised he voted No on the budget.

A reason some senators gave for voting Yes was that it was better than having to go through the motions a fourth time. But an honest budget is well worth a fourth hearing in the senate; isn’t that what senators have been elected to do anyway? Alas, expediency once again won. But I’m proud of My Prez, he stood his ground even if he was alone in the crowd.

This is not the first time. He’s said before: he’d rather be unpopular than be hard-pressed to support what he did not believe in. It’s so unlike the politicians I’ve grown weary of over the years, politicians who play to the gallery, without principle, without cause but their own.

Which brings me to Martial Law. There is talk that GMA lifted ML to save face because she knew the courts would censure her. Again, a politician I’ve grown so weary of, and I think 79% of all voters would agree.

Standing his ground, Noynoy is urging us to be remain vigilant, to press Congress and the Courts to still have GMA account for her actions. The past, after all, is precedent. She can do it again, unless we put our foot down.

In the coming months, we will be tested by political forces trying to bend us to their self-serving agendas. Ngayon palang, sa pagsusupil ng COMELEC kay Gov Grace ng Isabela, sinusubukan na tayo. It will be a trying time for all of us, pero tatagumpay din tayo. I say we take Noynoy Aquino’s lead, and stand our ground.
