Noynoy & Peping

Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE PERILS OF A FRONT-RUNNER; ALMOST EVERY-thing can be taken as a test. But one test in particular is almost as character-revealing for Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino as the resolution of the various Hacienda Luisita controversies. We mean the petty partisanship of the president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, Jose “Peping” Cojuangco.

Cojuangco, of course, is the late President Corazon Aquino’s younger brother, who served as representative of Tarlac and peerless broker of power in Congress during the Aquino years. He is also POC president until 2012.

Which brings us to Noynoy Aquino’s wholly unexpected candidacy. He seeks to offer the best the Filipino is capable of giving: a noble life, like his sainted mother’s; even life itself, like his martyred father. Somehow we cannot imagine the young Aquino learning to define the national interest in his own, personal terms.

But failure to imagine is one thing; a failure to respond is another. The very principles of Aquino’s campaign compel him, not only to distance himself from his genial and generous uncle, but to attack the decision-making that led to his uncle’s manipulation of Bitbit.

  • Here is another demolition issue now!!! The writer didn’t even put her/his in this news article…Is this really normal with the Philippine Daily Inquirer? Or the journalist just like to hide from Filipino readers? hmmm

  • Net we need to be informed, so we can be fully equipped for the battle…So we will not be surprised.

  • awie, i know you mean well, just my thought anyway. di man lang kasi nagpakilala ang nagsulat nyan. para alam natin ano at saan siya nanggaling. peace ha! :)

  • i don’t see any noble life offered by noynoy mr writer…
a simple erradication of corruption as a head of our country is enough to make a great change in our system…
if there’s any anomaly in peping, better gather evidences and file it in court, like what noynoy said, kung may ebidensiya, litisin at ikulong na walang mangyayaring pigilan, manipulasyon at takipan sa kanyang liderato…

  • Yes, I noticed that all articles under editorial has no name of the writer. .paki check kung tama..

  • Awie, this is an editorial. Editorial does not carry the name of the writer. I heard PDI’s editorial writers are MLQ3 and Amando Doronilla.

  • In the coming months we can hear or read more about Noynoy related to some nonsenses story, its election time other candidates dont uphold the ” FAIR GAME” play.So we have always to be vigilant and correct what is said wrong about Noynoy. The game (election)just begin.

  • Actually, this is a very valid point raised by the Inquirer editorial. It is just one of the many issues Sen. Noy needs to face if indeed he wins in the next elections. Not to say that Peping Cojuangco has indeed abused his power. Let us open our minds, this is a very real problem that Sen. Noy will face once he wins. And he will.

  • Hi Lito, thanks, I understand now. Most of the articles am reading in Philippine Inquirer actually is with corresponding names of the journalist.

  • I think the issue here is the resurection of Kamaganak Inc. I hope I will be proven wrong when Noynoy becomes president.

  • I believe Noynoy is man enough to stand for what is right, even if relatives or friends are involved. BETRAYAL IS SIMPLY NOT IN AQUINO’S VOCABULARY…His parents have invested soooo much in this country for Noynoy to just throw it away.

  • It’s good to be back ..from grand vacation…he..he..

One thing this writer donot know is that The POC is a private, non-governmental organization . It is financially independent and does not receive any subsidy from government and supports its own activities with funds generated from sponsorships, licensing fees on the use of the Olympic marks, IOC subsidy and proceeds from special projects and donations.
How Aquino,if become president, can possibly interfere with the affairs of a private entity ?
This is also to remind the writer that Peping held the office in 2005 up to present which was also the time that Cory and noynoy were already in the opposition and I think Political manipulation is something not possible under this condition and neither the GMA administration questioned or even raised issue against the management of POC .
The writer of this column ay malinaw na nanaghahanap lang nang butas sa pagkatao ni Noynoy at dahil wala siyang makita sa kay Noynoy , sa ibang tao niya ito hinahanap , which is unfair and a clear display of dirty politics.

  • I believe this PDI Editorial (penned no less by the Editor in Chief – Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc) is fair game. We need to highlight this in the campaign that the accusation re Kamaganak Inc. (Conjuangcos, Sumulongs, Aquinos) during Cory’s time although real and valid, will be different this time under Noynoy. And we can ensure this by closely following President Noynoy and expecting from him outmost transparency and accountability specially in areas where there may be conflicts of interest. Kasi naman before, after we elect Cory, eh pinabayaan na natin….

  • @Jet,We have diiferent opinion on any issues as for me the issues seems not fair because , if we try to examine it thoroughly that not even GMA herself had interfered any affairs in the POC , primarily because of POC independence . Now ,the PDI is obviously speculating to something beyond the authority or juridisction of Noynoy or to any other presidentiables,if elected . Something is fishy about it,if you will just try to open your eyes on it.
Regarding on how Peping runs the committee is entirely his way of doing it,Noynoy or any government officer cannot do something about it ,even GMA .
POC is not just a mere barangay or purok committee,it is compose of Intelligent,Independent and professional members ,however , the PDI editorial make it appear that they are entirely morons.
By Bedevilling Peping and directly link it to Noynoy is something you consider fair enough , which for me, is obviously a clear display of dirty politics in progress.

  • @jet, regarding Cory , I beg to disagree on that , the word “Kasi” sounds not so good to me, it is implying something very bad about it . Cory never cheated the public as your statement appears to be .

  • @Dennis, the phrase “pinabayaan na natin” was coined from Noynoy himself. In one of the interviews, he said that their family felt deserted after they assumed Malacanang…. against Marcos Loyalists, against coup plotters…. All I am saying is the Filipinos should never end their active participation when they cast their ballots but there should be a continued effort towards productive volunteerism in worthwhile government programs and proactive vigilant monitoring of government work…. this way we will get a good government that we truly deserve…

  • @Jet , ok I understand , thanks

  • To add to that, we should also hold our leaders accountable for all the programs that they promise to implement once elected. I agree with Jet. Our support should not stop once a candidate is sworn in. Filipinos should have a more active role in governance and not just leave it to the politicians.

  • @Gian, amen to that… Only in a cycle of politicians committing to a substantive platform of government and people holding these politicians to their promised platforms can we truly achieve real transformational change and progress ….
