LP fields architect to foil Arroyo in Pampanga

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Philippines—The Liberal Party is fielding an architect to face President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the race for the Congress seat representing the district.
Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio, also the LP provincial chair, presented Adonis Simpao, an architect and one of Panlilio’s supporters, as the LP’s candidate against Arroyo on Wednesday.
Panlilio, LP chair in Pampanga, said party leaders talked to Simpao on Monday, the day Arroyo confirmed she was running for representative, to urge him to run.
“I am not here to compete. I accepted the challenge of running against Ms Arroyo because we wanted somebody to stand for good governance,” said Simpao.
He said he filed his CoC, on Tuesday, not because he was forced by LP leaders to do so. He said it was the political situation in Pampanga that made him decide to run against the President.
"I am determined to continue the fight started by my father and my mother to see
that democracy takes root and is strengthened in our country. This cannot happen
in a government that serves the interest of the powerful few. We must strengthen
the institutions of government so that they truly serve the interests of our people."
